The SIN or Social Insurance Number is a nine digit number that is needed for a person to get a job in Canada. You also need it to get an access to government benefits and programs. One SIN is issued for a single person only and nobody else can use it. In fact, you would be the only person who would be the in charge of the safety of your SIN so keep it in a safe space.

Service Canada issues SINs in the paper format as SIN plastic card’s production has stopped. You can even apply for your new-born’s SIN through New-born Registration Service. Now, you must be confused as to how to apply for it? Well, there are a few ways through which you can do this. Here they are.

    1. Applying in person. Once you reach Canada, this is one of the first things that you need to do. To apply for SIN, to obtain SIN confirmation or to amend the SIN record, you simply need to gather all the documents required for this process and take them to Service Canada office that is nearest to you place. If everything you gave is ap per their standards, then you will get you SIN then and there only.
    2. Applying via mail. Only those who have limitations that don’t let them visit a Service Canada office or who are outside the country can apply via mail. You will need a fully filled SIN application form and original documents to support your application.

Now, before you apply, you need to know the eligibility too. If you are a temporary resident, permanent resident or a Canadian citizen then only you will get a SIN in order to work in Canada and to receive government provided benefits. Children can also apply for their own SIN but in that case, they need to be 12 years old or older.
